As the old adage goes, ‘Healthy body, healthy mind’.
This is more than just a catchy phrase, as is often the case, there is real wisdom contained within the idioms and maxims that have endured, and this is no exception.
Self-improvement
Since then, over the last few decades, self-improvement has come to the forefront of society, often expressed in a gym membership or taking up running.
Sometimes, however, this force for good can be a double-edged sword – lurking behind the positive drive is an industry that capitalises on feelings of guilt or shame, drawn from unfair expectations about body-image and time-constraints.
Mind & Body
In many ancient cultures meditation was inseparably married to one form of physical activity of another, such as Yoga or Tai Chi.
Meditation can be a wonderful ballast to this balance, helping us to encourage the positive traits of our lives and reducing the negative ones.
By changing the way we react to external pressure at the deepest level, we change how we experience them at the surface level and thus a physical level.
It might lose its strength and go limp, or lose its colour and wilt.
Any good gardener will tell you that treatment is often best administered from the roots because this is where the plant is grounded, where it gets its nourishment, and what will prevent further incidents occurring.
The mind and body are often inseparable in terms of health by having a healthy, stress-free mind can do wonders in revitalising ourselves and preventing future issues.
Establishing ourselves as a whole, mind, and body, is the first step on the path towards becoming fully aware of ourselves and growing into the person we desire to be.
