Spiritual aspects: sixth sense & intuition

The Anja, or ‘Third Eye Chakra’ is the sixth chakra in the chakra system. Located directly above and between your eyebrows, this chakra brings about emotional balance, insight, and intuition.

Those who lack a connection to this energy center often experience a lack of insight and intuition and can become highly emotional. The third eye chakra is often symbolized by a downward-facing triangle emitting indigo chakra energy.

When connected to our sense of intuition, we are able to recognize our dreams, our goals, and our aspirations.

Where Is the Ajna Chakra?

Anja is supposedly linked to our third eye. In spiritual beliefs, this mystical area is located in the center of the forehead and is said to be the seat of the soul, related to conscious perception as well as being our center of intuition.

In modern times, new age thought has connected the third eye to the pineal gland, a small pine cone gland located in our brains just behind the eyes.

The pineal gland is responsible for releasing a hormone called melatonin that regulates our sleeping and waking cycle, known as ‘the circadian rhythms’.

What Happens When Ajna Chakra Opens?

Through a combination of spiritual practices and living consciously, the third eye chakra can be revealed, helping us connect deeper to our intuition, gaining greater fulfilment in life, both spiritually and physically.

Those who say they have experienced opening their third eye claim they have increased psychic abilities, mystical experiences, improved brain function and creativity.

How Do You Heal Ajna Chakra?

To open your third eye, there are a variety of healing practices that can be incorporated into your daily life to increase your spiritual connection and bring your Anja chakra into alignment.

What causes a chakra imbalance can vary, therefore so can the way you should bring it back. Below is a selection of meditations, yoga asanas, affirmation and lifestyle choices you can try to aid you in opening your third eye. Listen to your intuition and choose what seems right for you.

Third Eye Chakra Meditation

Meditation and spiritual contemplation are probably the most common practices used to open the Ajna chakra.

In meditation, you use breath and relaxation techniques to calm and center yourself before entering a deeper state of awareness. During this time, you focus on your mind, body and emotions and surrender the thoughts that are distracting you.

Sound Meditation

Sound therapy is a form of meditation where your mind focuses on relaxing and energy-boosting sound waves designed to aid in putting you in a meditative state.

These sounds could be created from chanting, singing bowls or Solfeggio frequencies, a type of musical therapy that uses two different frequencies to create relaxing and healing waves.

When done on a regular basis, sound therapy can balance your
energy centers as well as improve your quality of sleep.

Try this Mindfulness of Sound practice to see if this is right for you.

Mantra Meditation

Mantra meditation is also commonly used to help open the chakras. Each chakra has its corresponding ‘seed mantra’ that resonates at the same frequency as its chakra. The third eye and crown chakra are the only two chakras that share a seed syllable, ‘OM.

This form of meditation is practised by repeating the mantra ‘Om’ in your mind.

Listen to how the mantra is pronounced below ‘aum’ and start practising for 3-6 minutes. Once you become more comfortable with the practice, try to increase it to 10 – 15 minutes.

Anja Mudra

A mudra is a hand position you adopt whilst meditating that activates certain energies. To perform the Anja mudra put both your hands in front of the lower part of your breast and touch the tips of your two middle fingers together whilst your other fingers are bent at the first joint.
